I wrote this a few weeks ago (when it was relevant) but I guess now is as good as any time to post it. This is NOT a personal attack on Bristol - this is meant to show the lunacy of her being toted as a moral example by conservatives while she turns against everything they consider to be 'morally absolute'. I respect her for her decisions and for what she said on Fox news. I'm criticizing the right's usage of this poor girl for political gain. I apologize if that isn't apparent in the article.
Do you remember a time before November 2008? A time before the second coming of Christ - I mean - Obama. Think hard enough and you should be able to pull a slightly familiar name from the depths of your mind. Sarah Palin.
No? Still can't remember her? Okay, think of the last joke you heard. Remember the punch line?
Good. Glad we're both on the same page now.
Now think back to this:
Evangelicals rally behind Palin after pregnancy news
Bristol Palin, 17 year old daughter of Vice Presidential candidate for MILF of the year, got pregnant and the entire Republican party (including the Evangelicals mentioned in the article above) praised the unmarried and pregnant girl for deciding to keep the child.
That's right - Republicans and evangelicals PRAISED Bristol Palin for keeping the child and completely overlooked the fact that she was pregnant out of wedlock. Hypocrisy? Coming from the two groups claiming themselves to be the moral pillar of society, sure. If you remember back to the Jamie Lynn Spears pregnancy debacle, they were all over Fox News screaming about how her show should be taken off the air before every Disney-loving 14 year-old girl decided to go out and get knocked up.
Obviously, such hypocrisy comes as no surprise to me.
But I'd like to update you on two current events:
- February 16, 2009, Bristol Palin appears on Fox News (uh oh) and admits that abstinence-only sex education is 'unrealistic' - a blatant affront to her mother's (as well as all the watchers of Fox News) political agenda. Strike one for the prodigal daughter. Source
- March 11, 2009, Bristol Palin breaks off the engagement with Mr. Daddy, Levi Johnson. Whoa. She is now a single (rephrase: UNMARRIED) 18 year old girl raising a child. Last I checked, this is a sin. Or treason. Or something unpatriotic. Strike two. Source
So what is strike three? Well fortunately for Bristol, she doesn't have to worry; strike three will never happen. Strike three would basically end all existence. Strike three would turn up into down - left into right - the entire world as we know it would cease to exist.
Strike three would only occur if the Republicans and Evangelicals admitted publicly - not to themselves in Bible Study Group - that Bristol Palin is the result of irresponsible sex education. Strike three would only occur if the aforementioned groups started referring to her the same way they refer to homosexual parents or single mothers from the ghetto - like stains on the soft, delicate carpet of parenthood. Strike three would only occur if these 'moral leaders' fessed up to the fact that responsible, hard-working same-sex couples such as Cat Cora and her partner are FAR better suited to be raising children than Bristol Palin.
But the Palin family doesn't have to worry about strike three. The conservatives and religious right of our great nation don't have to fear such a revolution.
Because we all know that the memory of a Republican only lasts as long as they need it to get into office...
Republican Hypocrisy, Not Palin's Daughter, Is The Issue
